Coral Reef Geochemistry & Microbiology Lab
(Reef GeM Lab)

The Coral Reef Geochemistry & Microbiology Lab (Reef GeM Lab) in the department of Geosciences at Florida Atlantic Universities studies interactions between corals, microbes, minerals, and nutrient cycles. The lab uses fieldwork and laboratory techniques, including isotope labelling, biomechanical measurements, geochemistry, microscopy, microsensors molecular biology, and bioinformatics, to understand how microbes impact corals and reef environments across species and scales. The lab is particularly focused on understanding how endolithic microbes living within reef framework contribute to biogeochemical cycling, as well as their impact on skeletal structure, biomineralization, and geochemistry. The Reef GeM lab also works in collaboration with local coral restoration efforts to help enhance the resilience of outplanted corals.
